When it comes to choosing where to learn to surf, a good place to start is by picking a great beginner surf beach. Things to think about are how consistent the waves are, the temperature in and out of the water, and what the seabed is made of: sand, rock, or reef. When you go on a surf holiday your surf instructor will always pick the best beach for the conditions on the day... but to help you get an idea of what these beach are like, here are some of our favourite perfect beginner surf beaches:
- 1- Foz Do Lizandro, Ericeira, Portugal
Part of the World Surf Reserve, Foz Do Lizandro in Ericeira is a favourite amongst beginner and mellow surfers. The sandy bottomed beach break offers consistent right and lefthand waves, and works at all tides. Along with its natural beauty at the river mouth of the river Lizandro, there are good local facilities for a well earned apres surf meal.
- 2- Cote des Basque, Biarritz, France
Enjoy the amazing views of the Basque coastline and infamous chateau on the rock from your surfboard from the waves of Cote Des Basque beach. Biarritz's sandy and rocky beach offers superb waves for learner surfers and longboarders. No wonder the Roxy Jam is held there every July.
- 3- Amado beach, Sagres, Vicentina Coast, Portugal
If you're looking a beach out in raw nature, then Amado beach is the one for you. With minimal civilization (car park and a small bar), the beach is very simply one of the best to learn to surf on the Vicentina Coast. With easy and consistent waves close to shore, the spot is ideal for practicing your pop-up technique again and again.
- 4- Flag beach, Corralejo, Fuerteventura
For when you love the sun as much as learning to surf, Flag Beach is perfect. Found on the wildly beautiful island of Fuerteventura- one of the Spanish Canary Islands, Flag Beach offers crystal clear blue waves, and pale golden sands to fall asleep whilst sunbathing on. We say- perfect combination.
- 5- La Zurriola, San Sebastian, Spain
If looking for the ultimate surf and city mix, a visit to San Sebastian's La Zurriola beach is a must. The learner surf beach is literally part of the city, so when you've finished your surf lesson, you can easily head into the centre to explore the culture rich old town, or the more modern areas where countless surf shops wait for you to discover them.
