Perfect Beach Day - Surfing Fuerteventura

Waking up to sunshine, warm breezes, and knowing that you're going to surf today is the best feeling.  After surviving the freezing crazy weather of winter this year, it's about time that we rewarded ourselves with a surf trip or two someone a lot warmer than Northern Europe.  So if you're looking for the perfect beach day, it's time to book up for surfing Fuerteventura....

 

If asked where would you be if you could see sweeping golden sand dunes and azur blue skies, you would be forgiven for answering the Sahara, or at least somewhere in Africa... Try Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.  Lying only 90 kilometres off the coast of Morocco, Fuerteventura benefits from the gorgeous year round north African weather, whilst still being part of Europe as one of the many Spanish Canarian Islands.  Even in the middle of winter, middle of the day temperatures are often 25 degrees C plus.. so for Spring expect temperatures to be up to 30 degrees in the daytime, and no lower than 15 degrees at night.

 

So when it comes to having a perfect beach day, or in fact a whole holiday, the best way to do it is to escape and explore. Think of huge stretches of perfect golden or black sand beaches where there are only a few other people about.  Surf rolls in, and there are too many waves to surf.  Fuerteventura has 125 miles of beaches, so hire a car if you want to discover just a few of them, or simply go for a walk if staying in the northern town of Corralejo and discover the stunning national park and its sand dunes on the way to the famous flag beach with it's amazing view of volcanic island Lobos.

 

Getting into the Fuerteventura beach way of life is simple- do less.  Think about taking a pack lunch, lots of water, a book and your ipod... and get ready to sleep.  There is something so ridiculously relaxing about the island's beaches, that before you know it, the peace and quiet will have infiltrated you, and you will be fast asleep in some sandy dugout, or draped over your beach towel.  Just remember to slap on the suncream, otherwise you wont be sleeping well that night!

 

For when you're feeling more active, Fuerteventura has masses of waves to uncover... but if you're new to surfing, get involved with some surf lessons.  Your instructor will take you to the best surf beaches for your skill level, and give you tips and advice as you progress to get your surfing better each day.  One of the best things about surfing Fuerteventura is that the water is so much warmer than mainland Europe all year round.  A shortie wetsuit, or even board shorts and a rash vest are ideal for surfing in... so you have more freedom of movement and will be lighter in the water.  Be warned though, once you surf without a wetsuit, you may like it so much you wont want to go back.
