After one of the wettest and coldest summers on record for the past 20 years, it’s little wonder that most of us are feeling the need for a much needed escape to the sun and surf.
If you feel yourself daydreaming of sunlight on your skin and plunging into the surf, you are not alone. We are craving some great surf, warm evenings in front of a barbie, and a break from it all. So in celebration of Autumn surf holidays, here are our best destinations for surf this September and October...
- Fuerteventura
Our love affair with Fuerteventura never fades, as the Spanish Canary Island pretty much guarantees you sunshine and warm waves. The sweeping volcanic landscape gives you space to relax, and there is always a surf-break that works around the island. So surf by day, and either relax or party by night.
Stay at the beautiful La Concha surf bungalows in Corralejo in the north of the island. Walking distance to the town centre for delicious meals or tapas, far too much shopping or of course- a fiesta.
- Cascais
If you fancy combining a weekend away for a city break with a much needed surf, then Cascais is the perfect destination. Cascais is full of history and is often compared to Monte Carlo for the rich architecture and wealth that the area has, yet the town is surrounded by ruggedly beautiful surf beaches. A perfect combination.
Lisbon is only 30km away from Cascais, so you can make the most of the shopping, sightseeing and general excellent food, and still return to the incredible Atlantic coastline for that fun in the surf.
- Lagos
With some of the warmest waters in Portugal and 8 months of the year dosed in 20+ sunshine, you’d be forgiven for Lagos your first choice. For all you sun, surf and warmth worshipers, Lagos is very well rounded to suit your needs. The stunning Algarve location provides every type of waves, catering for beginner surfers through to experts. So will keep everyone happy- even those who just want to take a siesta in the sun.
Stay at Casa Offshore, where you get two surf sessions each day; before you head back to the chilled house to relax with friends and enjoy a BBQ.
- Peniche
You can’t get closer to the waves with this one- where the accommodation is right on the beach at the Baleal Beach House. It’s not just any beach, as Baleal is located at the beach that Rip Curl use for their Rip Curl Pro ASP contest in October.
So if you are one of the lucky surfers who stay there during the contest, expect to see the world’s best surfers out in the waves putting on a display pretty much just for you during the day.
