If you are looking for a place to combine learning to surf and a relaxing holiday, then Ericeira in Portugal is one of the best places for a couples surf holiday. Mix one part stunning beaches with one part unspoilt cultural heritage, and you have the perfect combination for a holiday with a difference. Here are a few reasons why we love Ericeira with our other halves:
- 1- World Surf Reserve
Ericeira has the title of being a World Surf Reserve, one of only three in the world. Its stunning surf beaches are unspoilt and protected by the international rules governing the reserves. When on your surf holiday, you can choose from nine surf beaches surrounding the town to get you surfing... or if you fancy venturing further afield, there are even more waves to discover along the beautiful coastline.
- 2- Old Town Restaurants
For when you're not surfing, wandering the cobblestone streets of the old town of Ericeria is a must. There are numerous cafes, restaurants and bars to uncover, which will feel all the more rewarding after working up an appetite in the surf. Make sure you try the delicious local cuisine, especially the seafood, and sit back and admire the stunning cliff-top views from restaurants overlooking the Atlantic.
- 3- Beautiful Accommodation
Ericeira has a wide array of accommodation, but has somehow managed to steer clear of the gaudy tourist look. Instead is has subtle villas, apartments, and lodges all within easy reach of the town's surf beaches. We would especially recommend the Helios Bungalows, as they are on Foz do Lizandro beach, so you can combine stunning views with the easiest commute to the surf. There are only three bungalows, so they are very private. For the most relaxing experience, book outside of July and August- to have it to yourself.
- 4- Relaxation...
Whatever it is that helps you to relax Ericeira has got lots to offer. Choose from hiking, horseriding or even big game fishing for the more adventurous. Or if your thing is more a spot of retail therapy, if you've exhausted the surf shops of Ericeira itself, head to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, which lies only forty minutes away. Wind up your day by having a meal down on Foz do Lizandro beach at one of the many cafes on its newly build promenade... and watch the sunset.
