Surf Lessons often occur at the areas best and most reliable surf beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia do Amoreira, 20-30 minutes from Lagos. Depending on conditions you may surf at any number of surf beaches nearby such as Maia Praia, Castalejo, Arrifana, Zavial, Cabanas and Porto de Mos. Either way the surf schools will pick you up and take you to the best beaches on the day.
Don't worry if you have no experience whatsoever. The beginner's lessons are taught in waist deep water riding the white water only. You will learn everything from standing techniques to turning and finally paddling outside and learning how to catch ?green' (unbroken) waves. If you are already experienced the instructors will take you further out and help you develop your technique on bigger waves.
Lagos is a year round surf destination thanks to its position at the corner of the Algarve. It is one of Europe?s best kept secrets and offers waves for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers. It also has the warmest water in Portugal and the winter temperature is warm enough for t-shirts. In the summer the temperature is in the late 20s and stay bright until 10pm.
Within Lagos is the town's long golden sandy beach that seems to go on forever, Meia Praia, a very safe beginners surf beach, but not always reliable.
Further Afield
Head further West and after 20 minutes you arrive at a crossroad, take the turn South West and after a few minutes you reach the laid back surf town of Sagres where you will find breaks such as Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Zavial. Again different standards are catered for in these beaches that wrap around Cape St.Vincent
Alternatively take the right turn and after 10 minutes you will reach a great beginners /intermediate surf beach Praia do Amado. Close by is one of Portugal?s most beautiful beaches Praia da Bordeira. Further North is the world class surf break in Arrifana and beginners beach Amoreira. The UK's Independent newspaper sums it up best: "Here is one of Europe's undiscovered treasures - thankfully protected by a 120km-long Parque Natural, which helps ensure that "tourist development" mostly means a café in a shack on a beach. It all seems like a fabulous secret, shared only by the intrepid few who make it this far. Their reward? Having miles and miles of these dramatic beaches (almost) to themselves."

Had a great time, Jah Shaka is class, met cool people & had a laugh all week. The house is cool, great chill out vibe. The new surf instructor Benny is a legend, he brought me out past the breakers into the line up and I caught a class wave. The banter in the van on the way to the beach was a laugh too. Wind was onshore but we made the best of it for the week. Defo be back, maybe a winter wekend
I travelled to Jah Shaka alone for a short surf break, The staff here can't do enough to make you feel as relaxed as possible and get exactly what you want from your stay, if you want to chill alone, or join them and others for a drink or a meal, if you want to borrow a skateboard or a bike and skate into town, if you want to borrow a surf board and head off at 5.30 in the morning for an early session nothing is too much trouble. The staff always invite you along to anything their doing. It feels more like a bunch of people staying at a friends house. One of the results of this, is all the people staying here seemed to mix with total ease. I made some great friends here and highly recommend jah shaka to anyone. I stayed in the dorm room which was cool , however there was an accidental double booking for my last night so they gave me a few options and i ended up having my own double room in a very nice bed and breakfast 100 metres down the road for no cost on my behalf. As for the surfing, I went from being someone who was catching green waves out the back but mostly surfing down the face of the wave onto the flats and losing momentum. To catching more and bigger green waves and riding the face of them right across.Then starting to snake up and down the face and even looking at trying to make my first cut back attempts within a week. The instructors are excellent at what they do and explain to you where you are going wrong so well and clearly that it makes it much easier to follow exactly what they mean. I will definitely be hoping for a revisit to take my surfing up another notch
This place is amazing- The staff are great- Neil takes the time to introduce you and give you a tour- The instructors- Bra and Charlie-are extremely good at what hey do- they were able to have me surfing in three days on those killer waves- Barbeque Tuesdays was loads of fun- meeting people from all over the world and having a blast drinking Sangria. Even Aj the dog was cool. If you wish for a fun busy place don't hesitate- Thanks guys for an amazing experience
We stayed at the Jah Shaka Surf Villa for 7 days and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The Villa offers good, clean, affordable accommodation with a nice pool and great backgarden area to chill out in. All the staff are brilliant (Neill, Melanie, Charlie, Reese, Jamie and Niamh) and they make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive and are a really sound crowd to share a meal, a few beers and have a fun night out with. The Villa is only a 15minute walk to Luz and its nice restaurants and lovely beach. It's a 15minute taxi ride to Lagos from the villa, cost 13 euro, which is very affordable if sharing. I travelled solo, but you are guaranteed to meet lots of sound people from all over the world at the Villa, plus Neill organises BBQ nights at the villa, pizza excursions to Burgau (amazing pizza) and nights out in Lagos which makes it easy to meet and get to know new people.

I highly recommend a stay at the Jah Shaka Surf Villa, i don't think you'll be disappointed. Room Tip: The dormitory rooms are very comfortable. It's a nostalgic moment to sleep in a bunk bed again!
I liken the Jah Shaka Surf villa experience to staying at the home of really cool friends. The house has a clean and airy feel, with many creature and tech comforts such as swimming pool, balconies and verandas, wifi and a large-screen TV with tons of free movies and such on demand. Neil takes personal interest in not only making everyone feel comfortably at home in the villa, but also in providing seamless interface with whatever outdoor activities one may want to pursue during day (like surfing, SUP, mountain biking, kite surfing...)Thanks, all, for a great week!
I stayed at Jah Shaka in April and May for 12 days and had a ball. I went stand up paddling, bike riding and surfing. The villa has a great pool and hammocks to relax in. We had some delicious BBQ cook ups whilst I was there. The kitchen is fully equipped and had everything you need. The lounge was nice and spacious and had heaps of great movies. The dorm room was clean and the bath room even had a spa bath. Neil and the team were very helpful and friendly, they even drove us into Lagos for yoga classes and dinner at Nah Nah Bah. I hope to go back again sometime, I felt so relaxed and refreshed after my stay there
We stayed in a double room for a week in early May. The room was clean and sunny, with a nice sea facing balcony. The villa itself is perfectly placed in a quiet area just outside Luz, a 5 min drive for any store/restaurant needs. 
But really, this shouldn't be a common hotel review, cause JahShaka villa is much more than just a place to stay. It's like coming over to visit friends, and these friends (Neil and the team) are extremely helpful with whatever activities you've planned for the visit. Since we did a surfing trip, Neil was there to give us daily advice on the conditions considering our experience and once took us to a great remote surfing spot, the kind we'd hardly find on ourselves.
It's the perfect place to make great friends and explore the area, whatever you're up to. We didn't plan on making two trips to Portugal in a row, but that stay might've made us change our minds - Igor, St Petersburg, Russia
