Surf Lessons often occur at the areas best and most reliable surf beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia do Amoreira, 20-30 minutes from Lagos. Depending on conditions you may surf at any number of surf beaches nearby such as Maia Praia, Castalejo, Arrifana, Zavial, Cabanas and Porto de Mos. Either way the surf schools will pick you up and take you to the best beaches on the day.
Don't worry if you have no experience whatsoever. The beginner's lessons are taught in waist deep water riding the white water only. You will learn everything from standing techniques to turning and finally paddling outside and learning how to catch ?green' (unbroken) waves. If you are already experienced the instructors will take you further out and help you develop your technique on bigger waves.
Lagos is a year round surf destination thanks to its position at the corner of the Algarve. It is one of Europe?s best kept secrets and offers waves for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers. It also has the warmest water in Portugal and the winter temperature is warm enough for t-shirts. In the summer the temperature is in the late 20s and stay bright until 10pm.
Within Lagos is the town's long golden sandy beach that seems to go on forever, Meia Praia, a very safe beginners surf beach, but not always reliable.
Further Afield
Head further West and after 20 minutes you arrive at a crossroad, take the turn South West and after a few minutes you reach the laid back surf town of Sagres where you will find breaks such as Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Zavial. Again different standards are catered for in these beaches that wrap around Cape St.Vincent
Alternatively take the right turn and after 10 minutes you will reach a great beginners /intermediate surf beach Praia do Amado. Close by is one of Portugal?s most beautiful beaches Praia da Bordeira. Further North is the world class surf break in Arrifana and beginners beach Amoreira. The UK's Independent newspaper sums it up best: "Here is one of Europe's undiscovered treasures - thankfully protected by a 120km-long Parque Natural, which helps ensure that "tourist development" mostly means a café in a shack on a beach. It all seems like a fabulous secret, shared only by the intrepid few who make it this far. Their reward? Having miles and miles of these dramatic beaches (almost) to themselves."

The weekend in Lagos was a huge success. I was really impressed with the hotel/apartments for the price we paid, the pool in there was great and the rooms plenty big enough. The surf trip was also cool. They took us to a very nice small beach, and I managed to stand up on a few waves, so very happy with that. We then went and jumped off a big dam. Lagos hasn’t changed much since the last time I was there, still a lively town. Its so cheap there as well. Look forward to my next surfholidays holiday sometime soon
Accommodation was great, everyone in the group really liked it and had no fault with it whatsoever and in fact I would not hesitate at staying there again. We enjoyed the surfing. Wave's were decent. Lagos itself was really nice, liked the fact that it was a historical Portuguese town, with great restaurants and bars, something for everyone and we were spoilt with the choice! Great seafood! Highly recommend the place, and was pleasantly surprised by it as none of us had been there before - Mike , Tunbridge Wells
We had a great time in Lagos. Aqualuz was great, we especially liked the breakfast, all you can eat for 8 euro, yum yum. The walk to the surf house was about 3 minutes , perfect !! Surf was great, we are not really surfers, but it was really good fun the 3 of us got up a few times, so all good. Seb and Marcel are great guys, really friendly, fun, couldn't have been nicer. We went to the BBQ that they had on the Wednesday night , what a laugh. we all went into town then for some cocktails (about 25 of us ). Restaurants had great selection, good value , good quality. excellent sea food as you would expect. The first night we had Sea Bass , nom nom . The Portuguese Steak House sticks out in mind, prob as we went there early one evening :-) Over all an excellent week . I would recommend to everyone to go on a surf holiday , very well organized from start to finish
We were thrilled from start to finish! The short flight suited the kids perfectly and every day was blue skies with 28 degrees. Anthony used a local car hire firm; autorocha who were easy to deal with, fair; no extra charge for child carseat, roof rack, had tank half full and just asked for same on return, no credit card charge looked for and family car was fine size for 5. The apartment had helpful staff, especially in the free kids club, it was lovely around the pool area and the out door pools were ideal for kids and adults alike. We were central to shops for daily needs and the buffet was well priced and varied, the atmosphere at night was relaxing, the bar is tastefully decorated and the apartment was spacious, with ample kitchen facilities and was spotless; room service made beds and did a general clean with fresh towels daily, laundry facilities were self service which was fine. We were walking distance to the old town where there is enough shops and restaurants for all tastes. Food and drink in comparison to home was surprisingly good value for a family of five, approx €75.00, each night we ate in different restaurants trying off the beaten track as well as water front, no problem with any, we adore fish so were in our element. We explored the coast and so were glad to have a car, beaches were all stunning especially Amoeria where the national reserve made it more lovely, the lagoon and unspoilt beach dunes are stunning. Filip at the surf school was sweet, very good to kids and kindly invited us to use the large tent as ours for the duration, which was great for small boy to take a nap and avoid midday sun. The waves were good for kids to learn, bit messy each afternoon but maybe tiredness set in also, we had plenty of room shared out between the different surf schools, lunchtime snack was more than enough. The AquapShow in Quarteira was brillant, we spent the day there from early morning and there were slides and rides to suit all ages, good value enough when there for day; family €82.00, tenner for every photo bit steep but up to yourself if buy them or not. Booking with you and the emails before we left gave us the assurance needed for our first, but hopefully not last surf hol...i have recommended you to all on our return - Therese, Dublin
We had a great time in Lagos. We regret only staying for a few days. The Aqualuz was a quiet place to rest. Seb, Marcel and Lee the surf teachers were superb. They really know there stuff and on top they know how to entertain a group. Material and organization were excellent. We hung out a bit in Casa offshore also, a great meeting point and very recommendable. It was fun to hang out with an international crowd. In summary a very pleasant experience. A place and people you want to come back to! Ciao
We had a really good break. The apts were nice, super-friendly staff on the desk, would probably go back. Surf school run by some really nice people, Marcel the main teacher is great. Lagos is busy and it’s hard to reliably pick a restaurant as there are so many. Overall we had a great break, the surfing was the main thing which was excellent. We mainly surfed at Amoreira beach. I'd defo surf with them again if that helps – Iain, London
We had a fab time. Fil was an excellent host and instructor, I thought we might have to pack him in our case and bring him home as our boys thought he was great, and he makes fab sandwiches. The beach he took us to was small and not too busy, and the waves were great for us. The cafe there does great grilled squid! The Aqualuz was very comfortable and friendly, good location, we could wander into the old town when we wanted (or had the energy!).Lagos has some great restaurants and is quaint with its narrow windy streets to the harbour. We went out on the Bom Dia one day and that was fun too. A great time had by all - Angy, Adderbury, Oxfordshire
We had a great time in Portugal thank you. The room was excellent and the whole Aqualuz complex was very impressive. Our 3 days of surfing were brilliant. Found very good waves each day. The area was nice: not too many tourist mega-complexes compared to other towns in the algarve, easy to walk around, good resataurants. I would definitely return - John, Stockport, UK
We had a very good holiday in Lagos. The apartments and complex which are built in a high part of the town less than 10 mins walk from the centre and nearest beach, were very well designed and laid out, with great views of the surrounding area from the 4th floor and rooftop lounge area. We stayed in a very spacious one bed apt with a teenage son & daughter on the fourth floor, which only seemed like the 2nd floor due to the split levels and lifts or ramps for anyone with mobility problems. We didn't use the gym (free hour daily) or indoor pool at basement level, and other good facilities included a kids pool and large swimming pool, 2 bars, restaurant, and very helpful reception staff. Food in the restaurant was fairly basic when we tried the buffet option and not overly cheap at €15 per head for 3 courses. A Spar supermarket nearby had almost everything else we needed for the week. We ate out in some of your recommended restaurants with the nearby Pizzolino restaurant very good value with large Pizzas for only €7 ! There are lots of restaurants along the main streets to tempt any hungry surfers and no complaints about any of those we tried. The town centre is pedestrianised with a limited selection shops that seem to open only at night. The marina area and promenade is a lovely walk close to the town centre. A real highlight of the holiday was the extended 2 hour boat tour to see about 100 dolphins that we finally came across during the last trip of the day. Even the boat crew were very excited by this unusually big group that included baby dolphins jumping beside our speedboat. Our visit to the new Splash & Ride waterpark went well despite missing the bus to get there initially. We were not disappointed with the main reason we chose Lagos, which was to try out surfing in a warm and uncrowded location with good beaches and instructors. The service provided by Rita & Philippe from the surf school (the only one I believe that caters for family groups, was excellent from collection in the surf mobile (8 seater) to mastering the waves at a secluded beach with a cafe, about 30kms from Lagos in the National Park. This work is much more than a job for Pilippe who lives to surf ! The waves were excellent for beginners and only for his patience and repeated instructions I would not have got up on the board at 49 years young. We tried the surfing between 1 and 4 days depending on interest, age, & ability and enjoyed the lessons split over a full day 9.30 - 5.00. All in all we really enjoyed our vist to Lagos with a laid back friendly feel to the town like here about 20 years ago ! The best recommendation we can give is that we would all like to return to Lagos either for the surfing or other attractions. Thanks for your help in arranging the holiday at short notice and please pass on our thanks to Philippe and Rita also
Holiday was fantastic again . Apartment was as lovely as last time . Totally different holiday than when we went with the children . Brilliant night life and loads of friendly people far to many hang overs . With did kayaking and got in quite a bit of surfing. We surfed Carrapateira area and found a few other beaches around there. Can't wait to go back in October
We had a great time in Portugal. The room was excellent, and the whole Aqualuz complex was very impressive. Our 3 days of surfing were brilliant. Found very good waves each day. The area was nice: not too many tourist mega-complexes compared to other towns in the algarve, easy to walk around, good restaurants. We would definitely return
Accomodation was great. With the busy days we didn't spend a lot of time there but was nice to use the facilities one evening after surfing. The apartment was huge! The surf lessonswere great. The instructors really knew what they were talking about and were able to spend time whit people not picking it up as quickly as others. All in all they were great and pushed you to get the most out of the day. The town was very nice. Lovely beaches, harbour, old town etc. Very scenic. Beaches were great, fantastic coastline that you could spend hours exploring. Restaurants we did not visit too much but all experiences we had were good
Lagos was fantastic, nicest little place i've been to.the appartments were much better than we could have hoped for.The surf lessons were very usefull and we picked up plenty of tips. The instructers we're great craic and came out with us on more than 1 occasion!!We've made a few good friends on the holiday. We will return for sure next year and i would like to thank you for everything
Lagos was very nice, sunny, warm and great surf. It is very beatiful there. We will for sure come back. Aqualuz was great. We had a great aprtment where we cooked a lot. The surf lessons and the arrangment around the surf was also great. Sebastian and the other guys were really nice people and good teachers. Everybody was friendly and helpful. We also attended the BBQ in the surf house and that was awesome. I actually did a lot of improvements during the 10 days we surfed. I am quite proud that I can catch a green wave now. As a summary I can only say that both me and Sara are very happy with pur trip and are already planning a trip back. :-)
The holiday went very well. Surfing was great. The apartments were really nice, very comfortable and the staff there were very helpful. Sebastian and the rest of his team in the surf school/ surf house were spot on. They pretty much told us were to go to eat and drink in the evenings and they pointed us in the right direction. Taberna de lagos became the regular spot for a few drinks. really comfortable and not your normal holiday drinking hole by a long shot. little bit more expensive but well worth it. Do Cais on the marina is a good spot for dinner too. I would definitely recommend the apartments and the holiday to friends and family and would do it again in a flash! thanks for your help
We had a ball in Lagos. Great spot, just what we were looking for. The lessons were great craic but I'm afraid I wasn't a natural! We joined the surf school for a bbq on Wed which was good fun. All in all v positive, thanks for all your help! - Aoife & Daragh, Galway
Had a great surf holiday and the accommodation was very good. Lagos has it all. The surf was very nice but unfortunately I only got out for 2 days… Ah well that was my fault. John, Cavan
I'm sad to be back home to be honest! We had a fantastic time. The apartments were fabulous, spotlessly clean and the staff were very helpful (especially when the airport shuttle bus I reserved didnt turn up at 5am on the sunday morning!). Lagos is a great town, lovely food and cheap beer. Especially the Tapas place beside the three monkeys and a few others that I cant pronounce. Sebastian was hilarious, and Amado where we went most of the time was just so beautiful. The lessons worked, and Im now surfing away! If I were to recommend it to anyone though I'd advise them to go for ten days, Thanks for a great surf holiday, Sarah, Kerry
We had a great surf holiday. The accommodation was nice, clean and spacious. Location was good and niceplace to relax, overall brilliant and I recommended to my sister who is going over the end of July
I really enjoyed the week in Lagos, the town itself is beautiful, very authentic and laid back. The hotel I must say, for the price, was amazing! The staff couldnt have been more plesent and helpful, the breakfast could fill you up for the day! We surfed on four of the seven days with the surf school and loved it.
Great vacation overall. The weather was awesome as were the accommodations and the surf lessons. We really enjoyed the whole thing. What would be your recommendation for doing the same thing in a new locale? We would like to do another one at some point in the future
We had a great time. Weather was good, surf was mixed (some days consistent, some days inconsitent, but always waves). Surf leasons worked really well. Apartments were lovely - good size, excellent pool, great gym/jacuzi/etc, air con a godsend. Beach was limited near the hotel but that didn't worry us - as we always travelled to the surf. Everyone was very helpful which made it all more pleasant. Lagos had some lovely restaurants - although you did need to go on recommendations as some were abysmal (we only got caught out once!). We are even considering coming again next year early/mid Sept!!
